Introduction

While maintaining a professional practice as curator and mediator, I have continued my work as a visual artist. Although the practice of curator has been a career priority, the two identities of Curator and Artist have remained co-dependent throughout: the discoveries of the artist have been viable to the insights and artistic views of the curator, and vice versa.

I initiate, promote and support the production of artistic works with a focus on engaging in and with public space in dialogue with a diverse audience. Areas of my practice have included collected objects, social sculptures, site specific installations and interventions within urban environments, involving temporary spaces and local residents, specifically in various neighbourhoods of Amsterdam.

As the interests that are involved in my projects are often complex and multifaceted, I have learned to include several perspectives. Research, design, co-creation, and production are integral parts of my daily work in collaboration with artists, audiences and other stakeholders. I am comfortable to negotiate with partners at the municipal level, cultural and social institutions, public organizations, as well as with private initiatives.

For example in my former position as Director of Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen (Art Fortress at Vijfhuizen) in Haarlemmermeer, a UNESCO world heritage site in the slipstream of Amsterdam Airport, I was responsible for numerous contemporary art exhibitions, often including outdoor installations and the creation of new work. I ensured the quality and accessibility of the entire programme of Kunstfort within the context of its very particular heritage environment.

Curating

Organizing art exhibitions in museums, galleries or public spaces. Researching relevant movements, dialoguing with artists, stimulating new work, concept development, providing material for press releases and other communication channels.

Connecting

Advising, negotiating and producing in collaboration with artists, their audiences and other stakeholders. Specifically for artistic works with a focus on engaging in and with public space. Administrative tasks such as budgeting, fundraising, and grant writing.

Creating

My environment, people and situations beyond myself, drive my work. Although I am constantly exploring the possibilities of artistic interventions in the public sphere, this space is not only the location for my visual work, above all it provides inspiration.
